MSA FRBR Floater
Easy online access to titles with multiple editions and formats
FRBR Floater, from Monte Sano Associates, is an inno- vative new service that enables users to view, in an easy-to-read OPAC window, the various editions and formats owned by the library of any title searched. The user may then simply browse the list and select the one item that is most appropriate.
Libraries need not re-catalog their collections or manipulate their bibliographic databases, because we use a sophisticated algorithm, based on the new inter- national FRBR standard, to harvest the needed data from your existing MARC catalog records. As a result, libraries and their users can enjoy the benefits of FRBR without the time and expense of database analysis and re-design.
The user searches as always and, if the search pro- vides a result with more than one edition or format, a window appears that lists each edition and format, highlighting the difference for each item. The user can then easily determine which item is most appropriate and click on it for a full description and status update.
Library staff continue to catalog and use existing OPAC indexing as always. We provide the FRBR algorithm results from the processing of very large public and academic library databases, so that the matching against your database is accurate, instanta- neous, and always current.
We also provide the clear display software that enables a user to see the right edition or format immediately, without browsing down through long lists of confusing citations and conflicting catalog records—happy users via instant “FRBRization.”
